Options, Opening Line Competition, Opening Hours and A Documentary Tip!
Hello again and welcome to Mercier Press Newsletter #2
So our shop in St Lukes Cross has had plenty of people calling in to get books as presents (mostly for others, but some gifts to themselves too!) this week. We have many titles from our extensive catalogue - from Irish History to Literature to Folklore; a great Children’s section and hundreds of second hand books - curios, classics and plenty of Cookery for anyone looking for last minute inspiration! Vouchers are also available in the shop or online.
Some of the books that are a big hit in the last while include…
Step Into Nature by Rachel McKenna
The Essential George Boole: Logic, Love And Legacy by Des MacHale & Yvonne Cohen
Dark Streets by Tadhg Coakley
We are open all day today (Sunday 22 Dec) until 5.30pm… when our neighbours the Saint Lukes Male Voice Choir start their annual carol concert Live At Saint Lukes, along with The Jingle Belles, call in before they sing! They have been doing this Christmas event for nearly 2 decades, and as ever all the money raised goes to Marymount Hospice.
We will open tomorrow (Monday 23 Dec) from 9.30am to 1pm and we’ve decided to open on Christmas Eve from 3.30pm to 5.30pm-ish, for people to get ‘a few last bits’.
We then take some Christmas Holidays, and we suggest for some Christmas TV viewing to consider TG4 on Stephen’s Night when they broadcast this documentary on The Horgan Brothers…
Mercier Press are delighted to be printing a book about them in March of this year… You can preorder here
’In the late 1800s, a gilded age of technology and inventions, three Cork brothers were at the heart of new European photographic and moving picture technology. The young men from Youghal spent their time building and experimenting with lanterns, lamps and cameras bringing their own neighbours to the big screen... Youghal was on a par with Paris or even Hollywood. Their work, now rediscovered, is the oldest and most important collection of photography and film in Ireland and Mercier Press will present a title on their photography in March '25.’
It is due to be shown at 9.10pm on TG4 and will be available for streaming on the TG4 Player.

Finally, we’re starting a regular competition featuring our own books (which means Ronan doesn’t have to reach too far!) where we give you the opening line from one our books, and everyone who identifies the correct title goes into a draw to win €20 voucher for our shop (physical or online).
Email us at merciersubstack@gmail.com with your entry.
“Mrs Brennan took her seat again at the sewing-machine by the window. She sighed as she turned her tired eyes in search of some inducement to solace down the white road through the valley of Tullahanogue.”
For now, have a great Christmas week.
